I recently had the privilege of attending an inspiring performance of Handel’s Messiah. Before the concert began, the conductor stepped aside to share a few thoughts with the audience. I was moved by his message and would like to share the gist of it with you.
In this age of controversy and division, anxiety and fear, it is a privilege to gather for the sole purpose of enjoying beautiful music together. We are blessed to spend this time caught up in the inspiring music of Handel, an afternoon of respite for our weary souls. And so it was.
Both the chorus and orchestra performed with all their hearts. To watch their faces, as I listened, was to witness God’s people singing His praises with every ounce of their being. For those inspirational moments, I was uplifted and felt the presence of God.
I for one need to look for more of such times, moments to set aside the cares of our world and be one with my loving Lord. Perhaps we’ll gather around a Thanksgiving table and bow our heads in prayer with those we love. It might be some quiet time at home, opening our hearts to God as we listen to the music of Christmas. We may close our minds to troubles as we worship together, raising our voices as one, lifting our prayers together to the One who loves us unconditionally.
In this world of strife, God speaks to us. In these coming weeks of extra busyness, God speaks to us. His words are simple, yet so profound. “Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Are we listening?
