My great, great aunt worked sixty years (1932-1992) at Bowman’s Department Store in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She was a buyer in the foundations department. Foundations is a term that referred to ladies’ undergarments, such as corsets, girdles etc., apparel to create a supportive foundation.
Matthew 7:24-27 reminds us that building our house on a rock, a strong foundation, will support us when the storms of life come. This teaching does not imply IF a storm comes. Many read this passage and think with Christ as our solid rock, nothing will harm us. The interpretation should be WHEN the storm comes, have a house/faith built on a firm foundation to withstand and support you through the storm. Having Christ as the foundation of our faith, we will be partnered with Him through the storms of life. We will not necessarily escape them, but we will never be alone.
How can you create a firm foundation? Know the Lord Jesus Christ and study His word. Build a strong base of spiritual knowledge to lean into and be able to call upon Him for strength to sustain you through life’s storms. He forgives, He sustains, He blesses, He fortifies. Let the building begin, tie up your corset of faith building. May your foundation be Christ centered.
