If you have a pet, Is your pet a pedigree breed?

It seems the American Kennel Club seems to always show the newest breed during their dog shows. Many are mixed breeds from favorites, like the labradoodle being a mix of the Labrador retriever and a poodle, or the tiny fluff balls that are a mix of smaller and smaller breeds.

As I thought about Biblical times, I wondered about pets. My understanding is that animals served a purpose for life in Biblical times, such as being a food source, or using their wool/skin for clothing, sacrifices, or beasts of burden to carry persons and or belongings. There is a legend that while Mary was only given space in a stable or out building to deliver our beloved Savior, there were perhaps barn animals lingering in their stalls and a cat found its way to the manger and curled next to our Lord and kept Him warm. Mary, according to the legend, was so moved by the gentle gift, she touched the cat’s forehead and many cats to this day, bear the mark of “M” on their foreheads. (From my research, cats do not seem to be mentioned in the Bible, but dogs, lions, oxen and others are noted. Sheep are mentioned the most.)

For those who do have a pet, the attachment can become like their presence is that of FAMILY. We are guilty of that in our home. My husband claims our dog does not know he is a dog, our pooch believing he is one of “us.” With pet ownership come many responsibilities and much unconditional love. I can be having a bad hair day, or being dressed in the ratty bathrobe and my dog still craves a seat on my lap or his head scratched with those loving eyes locked into mine.

As a child of the most high God, you are  anointed, and created in His image. He loves you unconditionally and wants you to bow before Him in praise and worship. Your peace and comfort are His pleasure. Perhaps our pets have the right idea, give your love unconditionally to others. See the Holy Spirit in others. Know that God is your loving Master. Listen to His commands and know He is Lord of all.
