While looking for a blog topic, I came across this quote by English churchman and scholar Thomas Fuller: He loseth nothing who keepeth God for his friend. Fuller is known for his numerous wise and witty quotes. He lived during the turbulent time of the English Civil Wars. Interesting fact: he was one of the first writers to make a living with his writings. He had many patrons who supported his scholarship.
Let’s think about the quote. The friendship aspect of our relationship with God is one which, I think, deserves more prominence in our conversations. Not to diminish the power and majesty of the Creator God, but to emphasize that all our wants, needs, sorrows and joys can be brought to God in the intimacy of friendship.
We can fear the Lord and still enjoy the benefits of a loving friendship. The comfort given in a friendly relationship is powerful and healing. Our action in reaching out to God with the confidence of a best friend strengthens our connection with God. It keeps us in constant contact with Him.
Instead of fearing God’s response, we can trust that we will receive appropriate directions and support, just as we would from a trusted best friend.
He has named us His friends. He made the ultimate sacrifice for His friends. He died for us. And, He loves us unconditionally!
