Life is a Highway

I was thinking about this Tom Cochrane song the other day while driving along a busy Florida highway.  I wasn’t in a big rush, but everybody else was.  Cars were whizzing in and out of the lanes, narrowly avoiding catastrophe and I was carefully observing, just in case.

I often pray when I am on this road.  It is sometimes quite taxing and today was one of those days.  While I prayed for patience and safety, I began to get a metaphoric message about this road as a microcosm of humanity – “Life is a Highway.”  There are countless numbers of different cars, in all shapes, sizes and colors on this road at any time of the day or night.  Some are in good condition; others are on their last legs.  There are young ones, old ones and in-between ones.

The cars are driven by equally diverse humans from different parts of the world with different shapes, sizes and colors.  They all have different reasons for being on that highway at the time.  Some may have a shared purpose, but each being is unique to itself.

Some obey the rules of the road; some do not.  Some are slow; some are fast.   Some are angry and reckless; some are calm and cautious.

Is there a common denominator amidst all this diversity?  Yes, there is!  It is the Triune God who loves you and me and each of these multifaceted individuals – unconditionally.  We are all God’s children travelling down the highway of life and sometimes SR 200.

What better way to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day than by following Christ’s example and loving my neighbors?
