Your name is special to you. Your parents most likely thought carefully about the name they chose for you. Now you may or may not like it, but to them it was important. Some of us are named after relatives; some have biblical names; some have a name that was popular at the time of our birth.
However we feel about the name given to us, we can take comfort in the verse from Isaiah 43:1, “Fear not for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name, you are mine.” To me, that makes my relationship with God even more personal. He knows my name! He calls me by my name!
Remembering the names of people we meet can be challenging to all of us. We try little memory tricks to help us, and still we forget. But when we do remember the name of someone we’ve recently met, doesn’t it feel good? Our relationship is just a little more personal. It’s not just a general greeting of Good Morning, we greet them by name. We’ve begun to know each other. Perhaps we’re on the road to a real friendship.
Our Lord and Savior has many names: Alpha & Omega, Bread of Life, Son of God, Jesus, Messiah, Good Shepherd, Immanuel, Lamb of God. (In the interest of keeping you reading, I’ll stop there. The first site I checked for biblical names for Jesus listed more than fifty.)
To me, the name Jesus is most precious. It brings to mind this beautiful song by William and Gloria Gaither. Perhaps you know it too. The lyrics take us to a warm place of comfort in His unconditional love, His unconditional love for you and for me.

“Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
There’s something about that name.
Master, Savior, Jesus
Like the fragrance after the rain.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Let all heaven and earth proclaim
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away
But there’s something about that name.”*
