Changing the Time

Daylight Savings Time began yesterday.  My body is still rebelling.   What do you mean it’s time to get up?  I want another hour!   I’ve not figured out how such a small time change can be so disruptive, but hopefully in a week or two all will be well once again.  Ah, patience.

We find our lives controlled by time. We check our watch.  Will we be done on time?  Will we get there on time? Is it time for dinner?  Is it time for our favorite TV show?  Is it time for our doctor’s appointment?  We check our calendars. Is that meeting today? When do we refill that prescription?  When is that grandchild’s birthday?  And a big one, how many days until Christmas?   It’s hard to imagine life without the constrictions of time.

I’m reminded of the beautiful verses from Ecclesiastes that so aptly describe the time of our life.  I wondered who wrote these words of wisdom.   Some sources said Solomon, some suggested it was edited by Hezekiah, many said we just don’t know.  You’ve probably known many of these times in the ebb and flow of your lifetime.

1There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.”  Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

What a comfort that the eternity of God knows no time.  God has no beginning and no end.  He’s not anxious about our “time” worries, He’s just here, all of the time.  He is with us when we weep and when we laugh. He’s with us when we’re late and when we’re early.  We may be racing towards a deadline, He isn’t.  Makes me want to slow down and take a deep breath, to breathe in His timeless, comforting, unconditional love:  His love for you, His love for me.
