Today is my youngest granddaughter’s eighteenth birthday. We joined an internet video party to celebrate her day. There were groups of people from all over the country on the video feed. Her sister was in Vermont. Her godfather was in his car in D.C. Her other grandparents were in Massachusetts. Her uncles and cousins were in their homes. Various friends were scattered around her hometown. Only her Mom and Dad shared in the yummy birthday cake, but we all were able to see her beautiful smile and sing her “Happy Birthday.” My how times have changed!
One thing that hasn’t changed is the need to celebrate these landmark occasions. To cherish the accomplishments of our loved ones. To continue to let them know how much we love them and value their presence in our lives. These are difficult times for milestones of birthdays, graduations, weddings and other celebrations.
Jesus sets an example for us to show appreciation and love. While we don’t find narratives about birthday parties or graduation shindigs, the celebrations mentioned in Scripture are significant. The Marriage Feast at Cana (John 2:1-21) was the setting for His first miracle. It must have been quite a party!
Then, of course, the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) leaves us with not only a deep spiritual lesson but also a very down to earth lesson about honest expression of feelings and the value of celebration. Let’s not forget the delightful gift-giving by the Magi after finding the newborn Savior (Matthew 2:1-12).
Our God loves us with an unconditional love that celebrates our lives each and every day. He rejoices with us during times of delight and holds us tight during times of trial. He wants only the best for His people. Trust in God’s love and celebrate it always.
