Today is my baby brother Pierre’s birthday. He is four years older than my oldest son and has always been more like a brother than an uncle to him. A Blessing for us.
I remember when our parents announced that there would be a new baby in the house. We were gathered in the living room, all eight children. The youngest child was 2 years old, just out of diapers. When Mom told us what to expect next summer, one of my sisters exclaimed, “Oh no! Not another diaper pail!” It was the day of cloth diapers and that did present an issue in a household with only one bathroom for 10 people.
My mother reminded us of the wonder of children and all the benefits that each of us enjoyed from our sisters and brothers. It was true. Each child was loved, valued and cherished for their unique being. We looked forward with anticipation to this new arrival. A Blessing for us.
My mother was a no nonsense, practical woman who went about her daily life with purpose and determination. She did not question much in her life. When it came time for Pierre to make his appearance, she went to the hospital and delivered a lively, plump baby boy. A Blessing for us.
We were all delighted. How could the diaper pail spoil the enchantment of a new baby in the house? A Blessing for us.
Throughout the years, Pierre has continued to be a blessing for us. He has traveled the rough road of life with determination and guts. He put himself through college and graduate school with his expertise and training as a plumber (obtained in high school). He is a successful businessman in a sophisticated geotechnical field. His work ethic is inspirational. He is a generous and loving son, father, brother, uncle and friend. A Blessing for us.
For Pierre and for all the gifts and blessings in my life, I shout to the heavens my thanks and gratitude. God loves us unconditionally. That love manifests itself in many ways and forms, I only have to say “yes” to the grace and “thanks” when it appears. A Blessing for us All!
