Rolling Thunder

I just came back from a short walk. The evening breeze was refreshing and the setting sun was painting glorious colors on the horizon. Now, back at my familiar place before the computer, I’m surprised to hear rolls of thunder. Mother Nature has changed her tune rather abruptly. There’s an eerie sound to the thunder. It’s not yet the unnerving power of a violent storm, just a haunting precursor of a storm on its way.

You’ll have to forgive me here, for unlike many of you, I have no interest in the scientific explanation for this phenomena. Never did, probably never will. So I’ll stick to what I know, what I feel, when nature makes her presence known. Mother Nature’s thunder is powerful. It’s disturbing. It can be spine-chilling.

In the book of Job, the writer uses the analogy of mighty thunder to give a picture of God’s divine power and wisdom.

In Job 37:5, “God thunders wondrously with his voice; he does great things that we cannot comprehend.”

And again in Job 40:9, “Do you have an arm like God’s, and can your voice thunder like his?”

Does God want us to be afraid of Him? I don’t think so. He wants us to know Him as a warm loving Father; but He also wants us to know Him as the almighty ruler of the universe, the creator far beyond our wildest imaginings. He is the one who does “great things that we cannot comprehend.”

The image of mighty thunder may be a good reminder to us of God’s vast power. It’s a reminder not to limit our image of God to a humanness that we can comprehend. He is God; we are not.

But wonder of wonders, this all-powerful God loves us – each one of us. He loves YOU unconditionally.
