There are No Otters Yet . . .

Several years ago, I was graced with two playful otters frolicking in the lake under my porch window.  The lake was at a high level that year with the water to the top of the retaining wall.  This put the lake about 4 feet away from the porch, so I had a good view of the pair as they made their way down the shoreline.

I was having breakfast and reading the local paper, when I heard this churning in the water.  Imagine my delight when I lifted my head and saw these little furry beings rolling, literally rolling, around in the cold lake water.

I watched and waited to see what would happen.  They did not notice me or if they did, they did not care about my presence.  They just kept on playing, tumbling, chittering and enjoying themselves traveling down the shoreline.  There was such freedom in their actions, such natural behavior, no fear or aggression.  I was thrilled!

I felt blessed to have been included in a peak into otter world.  Each year, I have waited expectantly for a return of the otters, but, alas, they have not been back again.  But that will not stop me from continuing to wait for them.

The same is true of our wait for the return of the Christ.  All those years ago, the first followers had a life changing experience with Jesus and then He left them.  He promised to return, and that promise kept His followers energized to start preaching, teaching and spreading the Good News.  They waited expectantly for His return.  And we still wait.

We wait with the same desire and joy as the early disciples; trying in our own limited human ways to remain patient and understanding in the light of adversity.  Trying to accept that God’s time is not our time.  Believing that God knows something that we do not know and accepting that truth. Believing that God loves us unconditionally.   We wait.
