The Face of God

When a newborn arrives and we gaze into that precious little face, what do we say?  Oh he looks just like his father, or she looks just like her mother.  In fact all the relatives often join in the chorus of he/she looks just like . . .  We look closely and adoringly at that tiny face and we see (or think we do)  the family there in the little eyes, nose or hair.

In Psalm 105:4 we’re told, “Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face continually.”  Oh that we could see His face.  But our God is Spirit, He does not have human attributes like ours.  It’s so hard for us to comprehend a being that is purely spirit.  But still the Psalm tells us to seek His Face.

In Genesis 1:27 we read, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”   Ah, do we see the face of God in that infant’s face, in the faces of our loved ones, in the faces of those who look like us and the faces of those who do not?  Once we understand that we are all precious in God’s eyes, we are able to  see the image of God in each of the precious children of His creation, each created and blessed with His unconditional love.

A beautiful prayer taken from our hymnal reads as follows.  “O God of all, with wonderful diversity of languages and cultures you created all people in your image.  Free us from prejudice and fear, that we may see your face in the faces of people around the world; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen”

Seeking the face of God?   Look into the eyes of those around you.
