Reunions

Last week I was part of a Zoom reunion.  Our group of sorority sisters, who graduated in 1962, got together to celebrate our 80th birthdays.   We’ve had a number of reunions over the years and managed to stay in touch, but this was definitely a first.  Who says you can’t teach old dogs new tricks?  It was great fun to see all the familiar faces, even with lines and wrinkles where they didn’t used to be.

What is there about a reunion that is special?   Does it imply that the group  ”reunion-ing” was once very close?   Does it imply that a period of time or separation has passed?  Does it imply that those getting together share something in common, whether family ties or friendship?

There’s a grand reunion coming – far greater than our Zoom gatherings or family picnics.  There will be a grand reunion when God our Father welcomes all His children to their family home.   We will be reunited not only with our own families and loved ones, but also with the people of God from all ages. In heaven we will all be one loving family. The immense size of the family will not matter in the infinite perfection of heaven. We can’t even imagine an eternity spent in just that kind of rich, unending fellowship.

Some of you may remember this hymn.  As a child, I know it was sung at every funeral as well as in Sunday services.  It was actually one of my favorites.  So I share it here, as we anticipate the grandest of all reunions in our heavenly home.
