On a recent visit to the Harn Museum of Art in Gainesville, my attention was drawn to a display of tiny Chinese incense boxes. The detail work on these was exquisite. Above the display, a poster showed a magnified image of an intricate gold grasshopper atop a tiny square box. I started searching for it. The “grasshopper box,” located down near the floor, would have been easily overlooked. There I found the detailed and delicate treasure. I learned that in Chinese culture the grasshopper is symbolic of wealth, abundance, luck, longevity and fertility. It must have been a special lady who carried such a precious box.
I’m thinking that you and I also carry a precious treasure. Ours is a treasure more awesome than the golden grasshopper. We have the unconditional love of an Almighty God in our hearts. But, will anyone see it or will it be overlooked, hidden amidst the ideologies of our busy culture. Our treasure needs to be seen, to be shared with others. Will they need a magnifying glass to find it? Maybe we keep it hidden in our hearts or within the walls of our church. We carry that treasure within us everyday. Let’s open our hearts through our words and actions, sharing our treasure with our family, friends, and all we meet.
