In the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, the Gatlinburg Skybridge is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America. It stretches 680 feet across a deep valley in a single span. At its midpoint it is 150 feet in the air. Visitors can walk across at their own pace, enjoy the panoramic views, then walk back when they’re ready. In the middle of the span they walk across 30 feet of glass panels to view the expanse below as well as around them. An incredible experience!
Now I’m confident that the bridge meets safety standards, no need to worry. Except, I’m afraid of heights. Even the thought of crossing such a bridge makes me shudder. If you have this opportunity, you can tell me all about it, but any visit I make to the Smokey Mountains will omit that attraction.
Walking through life is sometimes as scary as crossing a long suspension bridge. To our left and right we see pitfalls. We walk gingerly; we try to stay surefooted. But, we can’t see the end of the bridge. We know where we’re headed, but we just don’t know how long the walk will be. Sometimes the view is lovely; sometimes storms make the bridge shake beneath us.
Our only hope is the unconditional love of the Almighty God. He is not only at the end of our journey, but he with us each step of the way. Trust him. Count on him. Faith is the bridge between where we are and where God is taking us. It’s a strong and sturdy bridge. When we trust God, we can continue, one step at a time. Keep the faith, my friends.
