A Lesson from a Little One

It seems like nighttime is when my brain whirls:  unsolved problems, health concerns, worries about my family.  I try to turn them over to God, but that little whirlwind in the mind swirls on.  Now thinking about these concerns is fine – but worrying is not.  Thinking involves working out a process.  Worry comes when I cannot control the outcome.  Aha, “control” is the operative word here.

I was reminded of one of my little grandchildren who used to love to take baths at my house.  Whenever adult conversation was just too boring or playing with her toys didn’t suit her fancy, she would ask if she could take a bath.   Sure, why not!   You see, we had a set of little yellow plastic ducks that she loved to play with.  She soaked happily in the tub doing whatever one does with little duckies.   When she was done, she’d drop the ducks back into a bucket beside the tub. I’d snuggle her with a fluffy towel and help her dress; then she happily returned to the world of family, knowing her ducks were safely tucked away.

Maybe I need to treat my worries the way she treated her little yellow ducks.  I could get them out at bedtime each night and pray them one-by-one into the Lord’s keeping.  List my troubles and like the little yellow ducks, drop them into His care.  Perhaps then I would easily fall asleep in peace, knowing each concern was safely in God’s hands.   Looking at life through the eyes of little ones can be quite refreshing.

Jesus said in John 14:27,  “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”  Ah, the peace that comes with welcoming this unconditional love.
