Enough

Flour. Eggs. Milk. With just those three ingredients my mother could make dumplings for goulash, noodles for soup, or palascinta–flat pancakes something like crepes. It mystified me that they were essentially the same thing, yet came out so different. I’d ask about the measurements. How much flour?  Enough, my mother replied. How much milk? Enough. That was no help, but it’s the same instructions my mother got from her mother and probably the same as she got from her mother. Genug. Enough.

I am mystified by people as well as dumplings and noodles. We human beings have 99.9% of our DNA in common. (We also share 96% of our DNA with chimpanzees, which might explain a lot about people.) Anyway, despite our essential similarity with each other, there seems to be a fixation on the 0.1% difference among people. People get into a tizzy over race, national origin, language, and on and on.

I suspect God would like to shout at us, “Enough!” We ignore the commonality of our being created in the image of God. It seems a hard lesson for us to learn. Paul had to remind the Galatians: “So there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, between slaves and free people, between men and women; you are all one in union with Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).

It is enough that we are children of the same heavenly Father. We need to treat one another with respect and compassion regardless of differences. May God bring us to see the wonder in each person. That will be enough.

Read Galatians 3:27-28 and remember: God loves YOU unconditionally.
