Perhaps the reason is self-evident. I’m going to continue with my subject from last week, that being the Word of God. Studying the Bible should fill us with a sense of adventure and fascination. Yes, even stirring up a little controversy along the way. God’s Book of Love is a treasury of stories, songs, letters, and history. Sometimes there is disagreement among them. Of course, that does not nullify any of it. Gee, maybe it’s because it encompasses all people, all history, even if some of it is mythical. When I say mythical, I don’t mean untrue. God’s Word is truth, in that it points us in the right direction. God’s great story, lived out through us, is covenantal. There are promises based on the deepest, most personal of relationships. Laws given to protect and love. Consequences allowed for the sake of growth. Mystery embedded, lest we think too highly of our own understanding. The granting of peace, so that our minds filled with fear and distrust do not cause our knees to jerk toward war.
I love the diversity of stories and how they are interpreted. Different translations, countless outlines for personal and group study. The enormous depth that can never be completely tapped. The wisest compilation of words ever composed. It’s like when you have so much to say, it’s hard to know where to start. Endless in possibilities.
Living and active – this is the most important reason for the Good Book. May this Word of Life bless you with countless treasures of application and answers that are crafted out of unconditional love.
