One of three of our granddaughters is named Elisabeth and her name is spelled with an “s” rather than a “z.” According to sources, the name Elisabeth means, “God is my oath,” and/or “a worshiper of God.” I love knowing our Izzy has a blessing of that name.
John the Baptist’s mother was named Elisabeth. She was a cousin to Mary, and from the lineage of Aaron. We know from the Bible story Elisabeth was married to Zacharias. Zacharias was a priest in the temple and married this pious woman, Elisabeth. As an aged couple, they were beyond child-bearing years, yet God answered their prayers for a child, they conceived.
Mary, while pregnant with Jesus, visited her cousin Elisabeth. Upon Mary’s arrival, John moved within Elisabeth’s womb. This confirmed to Elisabeth that what Mary had told her was true. Mary was indeed carrying the Messiah.
Elisabeth’s son, John, we know, went on to become known as John the Baptist, who prepared the Way for our Lord.
Though Zacharias and Elisabeth were godly parents, and surely taught John their beliefs in God and the fact that John was a miracle arriving in his mother’s old age, much of his learning occurred in the solitude of the desert.
As, I am so very proud of our Izzy, I know that Elisabeth and Zacharias must have reveled in their gift of John. Since older at his conception and birth, they probably were not alive to witness his many gifts, preaching and preparations for Jesus. We are blessed to be here now as our own Elisabeth grows and becomes a young woman with much ahead of her.
God loves us unconditionally and as the Almighty can anoint Mary, a virgin, to conceive our Lord. He can give Elisabeth and Zacharias, in their old age, a son. He can fill your life with gifts untold. Learn of Him. Be blessed.
