My new computer is proving to be a challenge. Oh yes, it does lots of things well, better than my now deceased model. But, there are also some frustrations, today’s being the lack of connection between computer and printer. They sit here on my desk side by side, but they’re not speaking. I’ve followed the directions provided, but no luck. As commander-in-chief of these two devices, I am failing miserably.
Connections are ever so important and not just between the two techie objects on my desk. We need and want connections with our friends and family members. At times we struggle with frustrations here too, but it’s well worth it to share our differences and restore the loving connections.
Then there’s the most important connection of all, our connection with our heavenly Father. We have a definite advantage here, because God never lets go of his end of the connection. He’s there. He’s reaching out to us. It is us who have to reach out to Him, to hold onto Him each and every day.
John speaks of this connection. “I am the vine, and you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me.” (John 15:5) The image of the vine gives us a tangible illustration of this connection.
I’m caught by the words, “for you can do nothing without me.” Without this connection we flounder about in our human weakness. Perhaps like my poor printer sitting here uselessly, until a connection is provided.
Most of all, it’s an awesome thought that the God who loves you unconditionally is reaching out with a sturdy vine to keep you close, to help you too bear the fruit the Spirit. Praise be to God!
