Deep Peace

How fitting in these troubled times – beset by illness and unrest, we share an underlying disquiet that fills our days and nights.  Individually we face illness, changes, and loss; at best our lives are unsettled.   Just a quick look at the news will fill anyone with anxiety.   Oh, how we need peace in our lives, deep peace.

There’s a beautiful Gaelic Blessing written by John Rutter called Deep Peace.   John Rutter, a contemporary composer of choral music, was born in London in 1945.  This Gaelic Blessing was first published in 1978.  The haunting and deeply spiritual music is known for the repetition of the phrase “Deep peace.”

The lyrics to the Gaelic Blessing follow:

“Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Deep peace of the gentle night to you.

Moon and stars pour their healing light on you.
Deep peace of Christ,
of Christ the light of the world to you.
Deep peace of Christ to you.”*

I attach a lovely version of the hymn sung by the pure voices of the boys choir, Libera.  I hope it will bring a moment of peace to your day.   Enjoy
