Would you say that a goose is wise? Would you say that it is wonderful? Well, I would.
Although we have all heard the term “silly goose”, I find geese to be quite wise. Notice that they do not stay in the cold North during the wintertime, but travel to the warmer climes. And vice versa come the Springtime.
The geese are back at the lake in front of my cottage. How do they know that the winter is coming and they need to prepare for the southern flight? They haven’t been here all summer, but about a week ago, they began to swoop in and started to feed on the lake weeds.
Do they notice the shortening days? The changing leaves? The cooling temperature? Although this week is not a good test of cooling temperature. Scientists have studied migratory birds for decades, maybe centuries. They still don’t know the answers to the mystery of how they know and why they know.
However, for me, this is another reminder of the wisdom, the cleverness of God. When God set the world in motion, He designed these wonderful creatures with an instinct for preservation that currently is beyond our understanding. These geese and their annual return serve as a source of awe and wonder for me, even though they are awfully noisy in the middle of the night.
They also remind me that it is time for me to pack up and return to the south. When you read this blog, we will be on our return trip to the warmer climes. Thanking God all the way for His gracious gifts in our lives.
Yes, the geese are wise and wonderful! The ants, which are now gone, are wise and wonderful! The spiders and ducks are wise and wonderful! All of God’s creatures are wise and wonderful, including you whom God loves unconditionally!
