I just read somewhere the other day a statement that stuck with me, “Communion is not just a ritual to take but rather should be considered a blessing to receive.” I liked this statement. It really resonated with me. Thinking back to a former congregation, many years ago, when communion was the first Sunday of the month, or on significant holy days within the church calendar; a new pastor changed the communion schedule to be every other Sunday. Eyebrows went up on some congregants faces.
Change isn’t always easy. (Sigh.) Personally, I was pleased with the change. Now that I commune every Sunday, even given a “drive thru” opportunity during the Pandemic of 2020, I do believe I am blessed with each communion I receive. Knowing in my heart that with each portion of His body in the wafer, I am healed by His stripes of suffering and with each cup of wine, His blood shed for me, I am forgiven. My week can then begin fresh and new.
Our Lord’s Words, at His last Passover meal, with his inner circle are repeated with each communion. DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME. As we partake of the meal, eating the bread and drinking the wine, may each of us remember Him. He suffered for each of us. He died that we might live. He loves us unconditionally.
Treasure the gift and opportunities you have to receive His body and His blood in the sacrament of Holy Communion. May you know that He chose you to be His and through the bread and wine receive his gifts of healing and forgiveness. Communion is not just a ritual, but a blessing.
