Labor Day Thoughts

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.”  Colossians 3:23

Whatever the tasks that we are given, we do everything for the Lord.  It’s so easy to look at our daily work as mundane.  I’m just washing the dishes or I’m just folding the clothes.   I find it’s also easy to mumble my way through the simple tasks, just a little grumpy about having to do this “again.”   Then sometimes we find ourselves faced with a task of more significance where others are depending on us.  Mmmh.  Then the worry buddies may kick in.  I don’t know if I can really do this well enough.  How will I ever be done on time?  What will people think?

Perhaps you’ve shared those feelings.  Oh my friends, Paul calls us back with his words to the Colossians.  “Whatever you do.”   Yep, big jobs, little jobs, important challenges, mundane stuff – whatever you do.   “Work at it with all your heart.”   OK, not listlessly, no complaining, no stressing out – just enthusiasm.  “As working for the Lord, not for men.”  That’s the clincher – the compliments of men don’t matter, we’re working for the Lord and He is well-pleased with our loving efforts.  We can’t be alone in needing this reminder, apparently the Colossians did too.

Let’s open our eyes to the opportunities God puts in front of us.  If we watch and listen, we’ll feel ourselves being nudged in the direction of a task to be done.  Maybe it’s a simple phone call that we could make today.   Maybe it’s a reminder of someone who needs our prayers.  Maybe it’s a prod to get up “cheerfully” and tackle the little tasks that keep our homes running smoothly.  Whatever you do, our Lord God loves you with the unconditional love that accepts all your efforts, no matter how humble.
