I remember singing a Sunday School song, Jacob’s Ladder. When my boys were in Sunday School, they too, learned this song. “We are climbing Jacob’s Ladder; we are climbing Jacob’s Ladder…” We had learned the Bible story related to this song, where Jacob has a dream and sees a ladder to heaven with ascending and descending angels. What a beautiful vision that must have been! The song was a spiritual from the era of slaves, possibly from the mid-1700’s.
In a study I read recently, it confirmed what I was understanding on my continued faith journey; Jesus is the ladder. When my thoughts were growing in faith and learning more and more about our Savior, I came to know that He is the “connection”, or in this case the Jacob’s dream ladder between us (earth) and Heaven.
John 14: 5-7 5 Thomas said unto Him, “Lord, we know not whither Thou goest; and how can we know the way?”
“ Jesus said unto him, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.”
Know in your hearts that as you grow in your faith (perhaps even recalling this song), you are making the connection that leads to eternal life with the Father. He loves you unconditionally and will guide you on the ladder of growth. Follow His plan. Read His Holy Word. Study. Pray. Believe. Trust. The ladder has rungs and with each step you take in your faith journey you will be “…climbing higher, higher.”
