It’s the Little Things

We all probably dreamed of accomplishing something really big in our lives at one time or another.  Maybe we thought we would be a movie star, a sports hero, a rock star, a top selling author or a CEO of a Fortune 500 company.  While there is nothing wrong with having big dreams, it seems it is the small, everyday things in our lives that make up the foundation of our existence.  Those little things include our everyday interactions with family, friends, co-workers and pretty much anyone we come into contact with.  It is the little things and how we deal with them in our lives that reveal our true characters.

When you actually think about accomplishing something really big or are faced with some huge task, how do we get there?  We take baby steps in these situations as well and it comes down to the little things again.  Your small acts of kindness, courtesy, a smile and a friendly greeting are little things we all can do, every day.  These small gestures can make a difference in the world around us.  If we resolve to perform these little things with love and respect towards our fellow man, we will have in this manner, done something great.

Mother Teresa, a saint in our time, was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2016.  She spoke these famous words: We can do no great things, only small things with great love.

Mother Teresa, who was known for her unshakable faith, invincible hope, unselfish sacrifice and extraordinary charity certainly did not begin her life journey thinking she would do something great.  She lived her life in service to the Lord through her ministry to the poorest of the poor.  She did thousands of “little things” that ultimately led to her Missionaries of Charity organization helping thousands of people along the way.  She made a huge impact on our world by doing little things with great compassion and love for her fellow man.

We will not all be “Mother Teresa’s” in this life, but we can all do small things with great love and remember the great, unconditional love from God we are blessed with every day.  Thanks be to God for this love and for the saints that came before us, are with us now and will come after we are gone.
