I shared a Thanksgiving meal with a wonderful new friend who has suffered unimaginable losses in her life. We briefly talked about the weight of those losses particularly during the holidays. She thanked me for the opportunity to share, and I was reminded how uncomfortable most of us are about discussing pain and loss. We don’t know what to say to make it better, and it just gets weird. So, we avoid it.
But God calls us to share in each other’s suffering. Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”
It is a Holy place. If someone brings you into this Holy place of suffering, it is a compliment. They are showing trust in you. It is a great opportunity to demonstrate Christian care, by taking a moment to listen, to feel, to be comfortable in that moment with them.
No words need be said, no wisdom need be offered. Just a moment to be present with someone so they can remember. You can be God’s love simply through your listening presence or a loving touch. It is as simple as that. A Gift.
