This Sunday after the service, we will be having a Ministry Fair.  A wonderful and rewarding ministry that is available in our congregation is Stephen Ministry-loving Christian caregiving to our fellow travelers along the road of life.

Here is a blog that I wrote several years ago describing an important characteristic of Stephen Ministers.  Maybe this will strike a chord with you and your thoughts about becoming one.

The “After People” is a term used to describe Stephen Ministers.  It is a striking one when one considers that “after” has no defined end date.  Stephen Ministers are there with their care receivers after the funeral is over and the neighbors’ dishes have been returned.  They are there after the tough decisions are made about where to move or what job to take.  They are there after and will stay after any crisis or situation which calls for spiritual comfort or growth.

Their role is not to take the Pastor’s position, but to complement it.  They are available for as long as the care receiver needs their support.  But, what kind of support do they give? 

They offer distinctly Christian caregiving.  Stephen Ministers receive over 50 hours of training in topics ranging from active listening to familiarity with local social service resources.  This training is enhanced with the overriding knowledge and acceptance that they are the “care-givers,” while Christ is the “cure-giver.”

In addition to the initial 50 hours of training before being commissioned, all Stephen Ministers meet twice a month for supervision and continuing education.  This is a commitment which all ministers honor, whether they have a current care receiver or not.   They are truly dedicated to bringing the healing love of Jesus Christ to all those who request their presence in their lives.

I can honestly say that the benefits which accrue to the Stephen Ministers themselves is immeasurable.  The comradery of like-minded people coupled with Christ-centered discussions provide a support system that is very difficult to replicate in the outside world.  Since confidentiality is a cornerstone of the ministry, Stephen Ministers are confident that “What happens in Swenson Hall, stays in Swenson Hall.”  Except maybe for some of the jokes that we tell! 

There is so much joy in this ministry that I cannot deny that the Holy Spirit is present in our sessions and in each care giver/care receiver meeting.  Another marvelous example and proof that God loves us, and that means you, unconditionally.
