This morning my hubbie took the car to the dealer’s for “routine maintenance.” I can’t say that’s my favorite way to spend a morning. Being very unmechanical, I can’t get excited about checking brakes, rotating tires, or adding fluids. Left to my own devices, I would no doubt put off this task until it was too late.
I checked the definition of maintenance; the act of maintaining or preserving something or someone. Maybe I should think of it as “routine preservation.” Does that have a better ring to it?
Our cars, our homes, our yards, our laundry – all need routine maintenance. And come to think of it, I should add one more. We need routine maintenance. I’m not talking about personal hygiene here, but about the routine maintenance of our hearts and souls.
The Lord fills my heart with love; I try, I really do, to express that love to those around me. Then, something comes up and I find myself irritated or impatient with someone. There should be a red light flashing! Time for some maintenance. Time to turn to the Lord, seek forgiveness, and ask to be set back on the right path. Left on our own, we cannot preserve a pure heart. Fortunately we have the most loving and powerful God who can and will preserve us. All we need do is ask. This is maintenance that I’d better not put off.
Your heavenly Father loves you unconditionally. He knows your every need and he’s always ready to hear your request.
Hope you enjoy the simple song “Create in Me a Pure Heart.”
