The country singer Tim McGraw had a hit song entitled “Humble and Kind”. The words are simple but are very telling. Each verse gives examples of the importance of remaining humble and kind in all your life’s dealings. They range from saying please and thank you, working hard to achieve your goals and when you do achieve them, remain modest, don’t hold a grudge, don’t lie, cheat or steal and when you do experience success, you can be proud of yourself, but then turn around and help the next person in line.
My favorite life axiom is attributed to C.S. Lewis. He said, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; It is thinking of yourself less”. Often, through the years, I have thought about this message and how impactful it is.
Jesus tells us that humility brings honor. In Proverbs, we read, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom” (11:2) “One’s pride will bring him low., but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor”. (29:23).
From the simple messages of Tim McGraw’s song, the wise words of C.S. Lewis and of course the most importance of all, the words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we learn how to live as humble people. You think of yourself less, thinking of others more and thinking of God most of all.
We are not called into his Kingdom to be kings, but to be servants. We are not placed on this earth to focus on what we don’t have but what we can give to others. If we submit our lives to God, true humility comes from confessing our sins and asking for forgiveness. Ultimately following the example of how Jesus lived His life and remembering God our Father in his unconditional love gave us the perfect gift of humility through His Son, Jesus Christ we will find peace. Jesus will transform you from a self-absorbed person into a person who thinks of God most of all. Thanks be to God!
