How many times are you asked this question? You see someone in the grocery store staring blankly at the empty shelves. And you ask, “What are you looking for?” Or your kids, aimlessly wandering about the house, searching for something that is probably right in front of them. How about the television ad about the man who is frantically searching for his glasses, which sit safely on top of his head?
These are all examples of people who are looking for something. People of whom you could ask, “What are you looking for?” However, I am thinking about a more profound search today. I want to fill the hole that exists in my being. That “God-shaped hole” described by Paschal so many centuries ago.
When I ask myself “What are you looking for?” I am hoping for the answer that will satisfy my thirst for protection, purpose, and love. It is not something that can be found in the world. It is only something that can be found in the arms of a loving God. Sometimes I have that answer and I feel complete and energized. There are other times when I wake in the morning and groan “Not another day of the same stuff…”
It is at this time that I petition the Holy Spirit to be present in my heart. I turn my will and my life over to the care of God. It never fails that this prayer brings relief and renewal. I know that I am loved by God, unconditionally, just as I am.
Remember that God loves you unconditionally. Depend on Jesus in everything that you do. This is the practice of faith. This is the practice of trust. This is the answer to “What are you looking for?”
