This quote from a popular series author had an impact on me. I would consider the series to be of the light mystery genre, so I was surprised to read this quote with the thoughtful consideration of the role of forgiveness in the main character’s life.
Abby, an author, and innkeeper lost her husband and infant son in a tragic automobile accident, when an unidentified distracted driver swerves into her husband’s lane. Abby begins a new life but has thoughts of revenge and punishment frequently in her thoughts. These thoughts overshadow all that she does.
Then, the District Attorney contacts her with information about the person who caused the accident. And asks her to weigh in on the suggested punishment. The above quote describes the result of that conversation.
I am not, in any way, implying that it is an easy decision to make. While the circumstances surrounding any tragedy can change the trajectory of one’s decision, they do not matter in the outcome. Forgiveness benefits all parties involved. Forgiveness is one of the most difficult of Christ’s instructions to follow.
It takes courage, strength, and humility to push down the very natural response for retribution. I have never had to face the horror of a loved one taken by violence caused by someone else. However, I have forgiven and been forgiven. It is freeing and cleansing. It creates a determination to change and repent.
It is the very nature of Lent and Christ’s sacrifice.
Remember that God, our Father, His Son, and the Holy Spirit, love you unconditionally.
