One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:39-43
What reassuring words those are. The criminal on the cross was at the last moment of his life when he turned to Jesus. No matter, his cry of Jesus Remember Me was answered. He would not receive what he deserved. His faith was answered with forgiveness.
Wherever we find ourselves today, whatever path we are taking, we are assured that we can turn to our Savior with the same plea, Jesus Remember Me. I’d like to share with you a simple song of that title that comes from the Taize tradition.
The Taizé Community is an ecumenical Christian monastic community in Taizé, France. It is composed of more than one hundred brothers from Catholic and Protestant traditions, who originate from about thirty countries around the world. It was founded in 1940 by Brother Roger Schutz, a Reformed Protestant. It is one of the world’s most important sites of Christian pilgrimage, with a focus on youth. Their music emphasizes simple phrases, usually lines from Psalms or other pieces of Scripture, repeated and sometimes sung in canon.
The music is simple, the message profound.
Enjoy
