The Easter Glow

Do you have an Easter Glow?  The liturgical season of Lent is a solemn preparation for the glorious triumph of Christ’s Resurrection.  Having arrived at that day, everyone glows with excitement and awe.

Jesus is risen!  He is risen indeed!  Alleluia! We shout this chant with smiles and tears.

As a child, Lent was a grave time in our family.  The decision to abstain or perform some form of penance was made with serious regard and devoutly practiced during the forty-day period to follow. So, when Easter Sunday arrived, there was great rejoicing, not only concerning Christ’s resurrection but the release from this personal sacrifice and the new clothes for church.

My Grandmother (Memere) always made sure that the little girls had new dresses for the big day.  It was a memorable experience to go shopping with her, as she insisted that she be the one to make the final decision.  Sometimes we had to make do with the only shoes that we had, but they would be cleaned and shined before leaving the house for church.

And, of course, there were new hats! Everyone had a new hat, even my little brothers.  Everyone had an Easter glow as we paraded into church as a family with their new clothes and hats. The symbolism behind this practice explains the need we have to show God that we have repented and want to be renewed in all ways.

When I was little, I enjoyed Easter for all the pomp, pageantry, and gifts.  As an adult and experienced Chistian, I see beyond the frills and outer manifestation to the real meaning and essence of the holy day.  The drama of Holy Week sets the stage for impact of Easter morning. The rolled back tomb shouts the victory of Christ over death and Satan. It glows!

It also shouts out the immutable fact that God loves you unconditionally. Remember this and keep your Easter glow all year round.
