Music for the Soul!

An important part of our church life revolves around the music that we make and listen to.  The perfect settings combined with the appropriate hymns enhance the meaning and impact of each worship service.  Also, the seriousness with which the music ministry regards these choices has immense influence on the results.

I am in the fortunate situation to experience all these factors at Joy. The folks making the music choices are thoughtful and present music that resonates with meaning. The accompanists are skilled and practiced. The choir practices and puts their best efforts into learning and improving their presentations.

Why do we do that? Do we expect to get rounds of applause or loud “Amen’s” after each selection? Do we feel that the congregation will find worship more meaningful with good music? Is this an opportunity for personal growth and practice of something that we love to do?

Truthfully, it may be a bit of each of these reasons. The ultimate reason is “to the glory of God.” In everything that we do, that goal is the over-arching umbrella. This goal makes everything worthwhile. It answers every question we may asked about why we do what we do.

In exchange, music fills our souls with contentment, pleasure and refreshment.  To sing or play or chose well, we accomplish personal goals with satisfaction and God is pleased.

Yes, the congregation also participates in these good results. The worship service is enhanced.  The music may soothe an ache or bring back a fond memory. The congregation’s attention is focused on the message of the day.

And they can sing! These are the voices that God gave us.  We can give them back to God. There is a beautiful harmony when all voices are blended in song to the Lord.

Let us sing to the Lord with all our souls.  Sing to the God who loves you unconditionally!
