As we all know, tomorrow is Mother’s Day. A few weeks ago I wrote my blog about Mothering Sunday which was started centuries ago and is different than our modern time Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day as we know it was started in the early 20th century by Anna Jarvis who organized the first Mother’s Day service of worship celebrating mothers at Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Of course, like all holidays it has mutated into something very commercial which was certainly not the original intent.
Helen Steiner Rice wrote this beautiful poem entitled A Mother’s Love which appeared in our bulletin a couple years ago.
A Mother’s Love is something that no one can explain,
It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain.
It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may,
For nothing can destroy it or take that love away.
It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking.
It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems.
It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation,
And it still remains a secret like the mystery of creation.
A many splendored miracle man cannot understand,
And another wondrous evidence of God’s guiding hand.
This poem is talking about the love we receive from our mothers. Most mothers love their children absolutely. They may not like some of the decisions we make, but they continue to love us in spite of that. Mothers are a beautiful gift from our Heavenly Father and of course without them, none of us would exist.
This poem could just as easily been titled “God’s Love”. Every word of it speaks the same message we can consistently count on without exception. God may not like some of the choices we make, but He loves us unconditionally and provides us with what we need, especially the love of and for our mothers. Thank you, God for our mothers and their unconditional love as well as your perfect love for us every day!
