Celebrations!

I have always loved celebrating my birthday.  My mother took great care to be sure that each child had a special day. I often wonder how she was able to do all that she did with so many beings to care for, but then I remember that she prayed all day long, “Dear God, give me strength.” And He did!

She made us a delicious chocolate cake with white buttercream frosting-homemade not from a can- in a big round pan.  Sometimes there would be specifically requested decorations on the cake.  I remember a sweet little ceramic train that she used for the boys.  In fact, my brother Eric still has that train and uses it each year for his cake. A very sentimental family.

We didn’t have birthday parties with children outside the family until out tenth birthday. That was a celebration of a different sort and lots of work for my mother. Generally, we didn’t need to have other children at our parties as we had plenty with just the sisters and brothers. Those were happy days with lots of fond memories.

This year’s birthday brought the same happy feelings. I am blessed with family near-by, a loving husband and special friends.  There was cake and delicious meals at fun places. I am still smiling at some of the memories.

I do have an undercurrent of regret that everyone does not have the same opportunity for a Happy Birthday that I have. Why is that I wonder? Why I am happy, well fed and content and others are sad, starving and scared? And what can I do to change that situation?

I do not have the answers.  I have learned to accept my blessings with a simple “Thank You.”  I have also learned to make an extra effort to give back and to follow Christ’s instructions to love one another. Helping with Interfaith Dinners, bringing food items for the food pantry, lovingly giving money to the man or woman standing by the stop sign. These are small steps but multiplied by many equals huge steps.

God loves us all equally and unconditionally. Can I love unconditionally? Probably not all the time, but I can make a start and practice as much as I can.  Happy Birthday to all you special people!  May God’s abundant blessings surround you with peace and joy.

Read Psalm 91 and take shelter in the Lord.
