My grandfather’s middle name was Abia and my great-nephew’s middle name is also Abia (named for my grandfather). According to research, Abia. as a boys’ name (can also be used as girls’ name) is of Hebrew origin, and the meaning of Abia is “God is my father”.
Abba is an Aramaic word that Jesus used when he was praying. It is used emphasizing the connection between father and child.
Dad, Daddy, Pop, Father so many terms we might choose to use to address our earthly fathers. Big responsibilities come with fatherhood. The role of provider and protector has evolved through the ages to include emphasizing and showing respect for the mother of his children, being present for his family, being supportive and a listener and more.
My dad was all of the above. I know I was blessed to have him as my earthly father. My heavenly father is ALL of those attributes and so much more. God’s never wavering unconditional love, His presence in my heart, Him being the source of all good and wonderful things in my life, being The Great Physician, being my Shepherd, All powerful, Ever-present, Merciful, and Faithful.
Honoring Father’s on this Father’s Day, we appreciate their presence in our lives and the role they try daily to fulfill for each of their children. Perhaps we should remember to honor our Heavenly Father for giving us His only Son who suffered and died for our sins. Jesus’ death and resurrection were the ultimate gift of love. Honor your father and Honor your Abia, Abba, God of the Universe, Protector and Provider of YOU!
