Today I want to share a hymn that is special to me. The words speak to me when I sing it. Truly God is calling each of us to follow. He wants us to abandon the things that are holding us back. Come, he says, I am waiting. The chorus follows:
Sweet Lord, you have looked into my eyes,
Kindly smiling, you’ve called out my name.
On the sand I’ve abandoned my small boat;
Now with you, I will seek other seas.
Perhaps it’s these summer days that remind me of lakeshores, memories that are sweet and happy. What a wonder it is that our sweet Lord comes down to our lakeshores to seek us. He smiles, he calls our name. We don’t have to go searching for him, he comes to seek us.
This simple hymn is based on Jesus’ coming down to the lakeshore to call simple fisherman to be his disciples. We hear their reply that they have no treasure to offer, only their fishnets and the will for working. They offer their hands, their willingness and love for the weary. They’re grateful that their sweet Lord has come to call them.
Jesus accepted these fishermen with his unconditional love. He accepts us the same. He calls out our name. He needs us. Will we follow?
