My Shield

“O Lord, You are my refuge and my shield.”  Psalm 119:114

I read this verse on my monthly calendar this morning.  I was especially taken with the word shield.   There are many words that come to mind when I think about my Lord Jesus, but shield is not often one of them.

As a soldier, David understood the value of a shield.  Shields were designed to defend their users from things like arrows, spears, rocks, and swords.  The shield wouldn’t be much good if it wasn’t strong enough to withstand these attacks.  A good shield could also be used as protection from the heat of the day, and a shelter to rest under at night.

What battle are you fighting right now?  Now you aren’t likely in need of protection from fiery darts and rocks, but perhaps you’ve been hurt by the words or actions of others.  Like me, you may feel under other attacks:  personal, financial, medical or something else.  It is then that we call upon our Lord for His protective shield around us. There is no shield stronger than Him.  He sees.  He knows what is happening.  Ask for His help.  Invite Him into the middle of your situation.  Ask for His protection and the wisdom on how to walk through this attack.

The Lord is your shield.  He shields you and surrounds you with His unconditional love.
