Visions of Angels

Please forgive me if this might be, if not a verbatim repeat, the semblance of one. Twenty-one years ago, my wife Debbie was visited by an angel. It was in recovery from her second brain surgery to alleviate her epileptic seizures. It was a craniotomy; the tiny portion of her left temporal lobe from which the seizures came was removed. She laid in her hospital bed with all of us around her. She asked, “who is that?”, gesturing to the foot of her bed. We saw no one. “Those must be some great pain meds”, we joked. “No!” She insisted. “There’s a man sitting on my bed, and he just told me that the surgery worked. Everything was going to be okay. And – he’s very good looking.”

Flash forward about six months. We had moved to seminary and were sitting in our student family housing living room. I had gotten her a book on angels, as now we were all enthralled by her vision. Suddenly Debbie blurted out, “that’s him!!” Wide-eyed, she pointed at a picture in her angel book. “That’s the man I saw on my hospital bed. Sure enough. An angel of healing. A very beautiful male figure.

Manifestations of the spiritual realm do not occur for all of us. Along with vivid dreams and speaking in tongues, they maintain an aura of mystery and eeriness. Apparitions of deceased loved ones are remarkable and convey powerful messages. Angels are very much among us. Everybody has several in their charge from God. Helpful strangers appear from seemingly nowhere. Events unfold in incredible fashion without reason, and then hindsight confirms how we were blessed or saved.

Another of countless, wondrous ways that our God demonstrates his constant, unconditional love.
