So much of our secular lives revolve around trusting other people. The first area that comes to my mind is in financial transactions. These might include trusting if someone writes you a check, it won’t bounce, trusting our banks to take good care of our money or trusting that people who accept our credit cards aren’t going to scam us and later use that information for their own gain. Sadly, once you have been stung by any of the above, you tend to lose your trust.
In the social and political world, trust is vital in maintaining the institutions of society and government, ensuring they function effectively. When we elect politicians, we are trusting they will represent their constituents and do what is right and just. The current lack of trust between the political parties and then between the people and their elected representatives is a huge part of why our government is not working as well as it should. We certainly have reason to not trust them at this point, but we can pray it will improve.
On personal levels, we need to be trustworthy people so others will trust us. We must be true to our word and do what we say we will do. We must be good stewards of the trust others place in us. This is true in marriage, in families, in friendships and in business just to name a few examples.
Ultimately, trust is a leap of faith whether it is in our secular lives or in our spiritual lives but there is one place we can TRUST without hesitancy.
In Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV the Bible tells us, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all ways submit to Him, and He will make your path straight.
It is with absolute assurance we can TRUST God. We know of God’s unconditional love for us. In His love, He wants us to come to Him and love others as He loves us. He will never fail us or ever leave us. What a blessing it is to have this peace. Thanks be to God!
