This African American spiritual hymn has come to us through many generations. The original author is unknown, yet the lyrics are powerful and simple. Numerous stanzas have appeared over the decades, but always the same refrain “Give me Jesus.” It has been recorded by gospel singers, by choirs, and by instrumentalists. You can picture it sung by enslaved Africans in the fields or by choirs in a concert hall. Either way the message is clear. No matter where I am, above all things “Give Me Jesus.”
The first stanza provides a perfect way for us to start each and every day.
In the morning when I rise,
in the morning when I rise,
in the morning when I rise,
give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus, give me Jesus.
You may have all this world, give me Jesus.
The scripture that comes to mind is Mark 8:36 “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?”
The version which follows was recorded by Fernando Ortega with the Rexburg Children’s Choir. The children inspire with their beautiful voices and joyful expressions. The youth music program in Rexburg, Idaho was founded in 2018 with children aged 6-18, directed by Ben Watson.
I hope you enjoy their music and feel the love of Jesus, yes his unconditional love can come through the voices of children.
