Peace Be With You!

The message “Do not be afraid” is repeated again and again throughout the Bible. And yet, people seem naturally fearful of unknown or uncertain situations. I suppose that’s why it’s necessary to repeat the message. Are you afraid when hurricanes threaten? Are you afraid for your property, your safety, or the safety of family and friends? If so, where or who do you turn to?

As I sit writing this, I am reminded of another storm long ago. This storm took place on the Sea of Capernaum. Jesus and his disciples were crossing over in a small boat when the winds picked up and the boat rocked and took in lots of water. The disciples were frightened! And Jesus was sound asleep. Fully human, Jesus was exhausted, fell asleep, and was sleeping right through the tossing boat, wind, splashes of water, and frantic disciples. Afraid for their lives, the disciples finally awakened a tired Jesus. Jesus rebuked the wind and waves, and there was a deep calm. The immediate danger over, the disciples were still afraid! Why? Because they were face to face with the power of a fully human and fully divine person—Jesus, and they just witnessed his divine power– a power stronger than the storm!  But God did not give us a spirit of fear; God gave us a spirit of power and love. (2 Tim. 1:7). God offers us peace.

As we face the storms of nature and the storms in our lives may we, too, turn to Jesus and ask for him to calm the storms. May we stand in awe of God’s power and love. May we dwell in God’s peace.

During the storm and aftermath of a hurricane, we have the opportunity to be God’s hands and feet at work in the world around us—for those most affected by the storm. We can bring God’s peace and presence and healing to those in need. Be courageous. Bring peace. Share God’s love. Peace be with you!

Remember: God loves YOU unconditionally!
