Asaph is credited with writing the 82nd Psalm. Eugene Peterson’s version of the Bible, The Message records the psalm like this:
God calls the judges into his courtroom,
he puts all the judges in the dock.
2-4 “Enough! You’ve corrupted justice long enough,
you’ve let the wicked get away with murder.
You’re here to defend the defenseless,
to make sure that underdogs get a fair break;
Your job is to stand up for the powerless,
and prosecute all those who exploit them.”
5 Ignorant judges! Head-in-the-sand judges!
They haven’t a clue to what’s going on.
And now everything’s falling apart,
the world’s coming unglued.
6-7 “I appointed you judges, each one of you,
deputies of the High God,
But you’ve betrayed your commission
and now you’re stripped of your rank, busted.”
8 O God, give them what they’ve got coming!
You’ve got the whole world in your hands!
God is JUDGE of all and this psalm is calling those who judge into His presence for an accounting. Asaph pleads in this writing that God rise and RULE this earth. I’m with Asaph. I’m not so sure that we are doing such a good job. So many of us tend to JUDGE everything and everyone, most especially those who have a different opinion from ours. Chief Critics! This world is struggling. I realize it has always struggled and humanity does get it “wrong” …often, but it seems lately like we are really making a bigger mess.
When we cry out to God pleading for guidance, let us trust His judgement to guide us and our decisions. Whether our plea is for personal strength and wisdom or for your personal prayer list: your prayers for your family, church, community or our world, know He is wise, omnipotent and in charge. God is judge of all but His unconditional love is available for each of us. May your faith grow and your trust in THE JUDGE of this world bring you peace.
