The Key

Who among us has not lost his keys?   Perhaps misplaced is a better word.  In either case, we’re ready to leave the house and we can’t.  We’re frustrated, baffled, and stopped in our tracks.  It might be time for “Honey, I can’t find my keys!”  We must find those keys!

In the Advent hymn, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, we find our Emmanuel referred to as the “Key of David.”  One thing that made David unique was the promise God made to him, that one of his descendants would bring salvation to all.  As for the “key,” well a key was symbol of authority, often worn on the shoulder of those who possessed official power.   We read the words of the prophet Isaiah,“ . . . the descendant of David.  He will have the keys of office; what he opens no one will shut and what he shuts, no one will open.”

In Revelations 3:7 we hear the resurrected Jesus speaking to John in a vision, “This is the message from the one who is holy and true.  He has the key that belonged to David, and when he opens a door, no one can close it, and when he closes it, no on can open it.

Frustrated and baffled no more, we have found the key to life everlasting.   Our Lord Jesus has that key, he will not lose it, and the door is open wide for us.

O come, O Key of David, come,
and open wide our heavenly home;
make safe the way that leads on high,
and close the path to misery.”

Rejoice!  Our God of unconditional love has the key to our salvation.
