Advent Continues

Tomorrow is the fourth Sunday of Advent and the spiritual preparation for the birth of Jesus Christ continues.  The actual tradition of using the Advent Wreath for this season originated among German Lutherans in the 16th Century, but the use of the four candles to represent the Sundays of Advent came about in 1839.

The first week of Advent we lit the HOPE candle or Prophecy Candle in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isaiah who foretold of the birth of Christ. Week two we lit the candle that represents FAITH.  It is also called the Bethlehem Candle as a reminder of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. The candle in week three symbolizes JOY and is called the Shepherd’s Candle. It is lit as a token of the joy the world experienced at the birth of Jesus. This is also the midpoint of Advent.

Tomorrow’s candle is the Angel’s Candle and represents PEACE. This candle marks the final week of prayer and penance as we wait for the birth of the Christ child. The candle also reminds us of the message of the angels, “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men”.

The lighted candles remind us the Christmas Light, (the Christ Child) is approaching bringing hope, joy and peace to all in our struggle against darkness.

Using the Advent Wreath is an excellent way to prepare your mind and heart for Christmas.  It reminds us of God’s unconditional love for us through the birth of His Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Thanks be to God for the best Christmas present ever!!
