God’s Will? Or My Will?

Here’s a familiar question that floats into my head when I face a decision. It doesn’t have to be an earth-shattering decision. It can be something as simple as “What shall I have for breakfast?”  Or something as crucial as “Should I face or avoid a conflict?”

I know, in my heart, that the best way to live my life is to follow God’s will. However, my will, my God-given free will, often steps right in and yells, “Stop! I want to do it this way-my way.” I don’t think that I am alone in this battle of wills.

So, how do I discern God’s will for me? How can I be confident that I am on the right track? In one of my daily meditation books I found some answers in Scripture.

James 1:5 – If you want to know what God wants you to do-ask Him, and He will gladly tell you. He will not resent you asking. *

Proverbs 2:6 – The Lord grants wisdom. *

Hosea 6:3 – Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know him! Then He will respond to us.*

Can it be that simple? Talk to God. Sit down in a chair and turn to face Him sitting next to you. Tell Him your situation, ask Him for direction. Talking with God and others who have a strong relationship with God can bring God’s will into focus. The intimacy of sharing everything with God creates a bond that can become true guidance.

It is important for me to remember that God’s will for me will not bring me to harm. That doesn’t mean that it will always be easy. It does mean that God’s love is so abundant and so powerful that it can overcome any adversity.

Here is the final biblical quote as found in 1 John 5:14 – We can be confident that He will listen to us whenever we ask Him for anything in line with His will.* (Emphasis added)

And especially, remember that God loves you unconditionally!
