Do You Know Where You’re Going (To)?

In the 1970’s, Diana Ross with her rich and beautiful voice, made “Do You Know Where You’re Going To?” a number one hit. The words to the first two verses are as follows:

Do you know where you’re going to?

Do you like the things that life is showing you?

Where are you going to? Do you know?

Do you get what you’re hoping for when you look behind you

there’s no open door.

What are you hoping for? Do you know?

At the time it was written, this was a song about lost love and was the theme song of the movie, “Mahogany”. I liked it and in spite of the fact the title sentence ended with a preposition which is a big grammatical no-no, that didn’t bother me like it does now after having taught language arts for 40 years.

Now however, when I think about these two verses, they have a different meaning for me? “Do you know where you’re going (to)?” That is a very serious question.  I hope I go to live eternally with the Lord after my earthly journey is over.  1 Peter 1: 3-4 (NIV) gives us this promise. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish,  spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you.

God’s unconditional love for us through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ who took on our sins on the cross gives us hope for our eternal life. We need to believe in Him and this blessed mercy He has shown us. Believing these words and trusting His promise of everlasting life is true! If we do these things, we know where we are going (to).  Thanks be to God!
