Today we celebrate Presidents’ Day. We pause to observe the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Both were strong leaders among men, serving our country during difficult times. It’s fitting that we remember them and their contributions to our nation. Since then, many men have assumed the mantle of President of these United States.
A few years ago, I attended a concert by Lynda Randall. If you are fans of Bill Gaither and his gospel music, you probably have heard Lynda’s deep soulful voice, as she shares in song what Jesus means to her. Predictably her concert was uplifting, inspiring and soothing to the soul
This concert fell shortly after the inauguration of President Trump. I’d like to share a bit of her commentary in reference to that event. Lynda said (and I quote loosely from memory), I did not pin my hope on President Obama. I did not set my hope on President Bush. And I do not fix my hope on President Trump. I set my hope in one place only – on Jesus Christ my Lord. He will not fail me!
She went on to say, if we want our country to see the light– to be more loving, more accepting of all despite race or creed– then this change must start right here within the church. We must be that change, together! Perhaps Linda’s signature song will give us hope:
“For the God on the mountain, is still God in the valley.
When things go wrong, he’ll make them right.
And the God of the good times, is still God in the bad times.
The God of the day, is still God in the night.”
You can help. You can pray for those who lead us. You can live in harmony with your church family, acknowledging our differences with love and taking heart in that which unites us. You can be an advocate for positive change. Most of all, keep your hopes set on Jesus Christ Your Lord. He will never let you down. Remember: God loves you unconditionally.
